Sahil Arora, in his twenties, was excitedly looking forward to watch the newest Bollywood offering featuring his beloved star.

But visiting the theatre required him to spend substantially - a seat at a Delhi modern theatre priced at 500 rupees around six dollars, almost a third of his per week allowance.

"I enjoyed the picture, but the price was a painful aspect," he stated. "Snacks was another 500 rupees, so I skipped it."

This sentiment is widespread. Growing admission and concession costs indicate cinema-goers are decreasing on their outings to theatres and transitioning towards less expensive digital options.

Statistics Reveal a Tale

During recent years, statistics shows that the average price of a film admission in the country has increased by forty-seven percent.

The Typical Admission Cost (average price) in the pandemic year was ₹91, while in 2024 it rose to ₹134, based on market analysis information.

Research findings adds that footfall in the country's cinemas has declined by 6% in 2024 as versus the previous year, continuing a trend in modern times.

Contemporary Theatre Viewpoint

A key factors why attending movies has become pricey is because older cinemas that provided lower-priced tickets have now been mostly substituted by premium modern theatres that offer a variety of services.

Yet cinema operators contend that ticket prices are justified and that patrons continue to attend in significant quantities.

A top representative from a major cinema network stated that the perception that audiences have ceased going to movie halls is "a common perception squeezed in without fact-checking".

He mentions his chain has recorded a footfall of 151 million in 2024, up from 140 million visitors in the previous year and the numbers have been promising for recent months as well.

Worth for Money

The executive admits getting some feedback about elevated admission prices, but maintains that moviegoers keep turn up because they get "worth the cost" - provided a movie is quality.

"Moviegoers leave after the duration feeling satisfied, they've enjoyed themselves in temperature-regulated convenience, with premium acoustics and an engaging atmosphere."

Various groups are employing dynamic rates and weekday discounts to attract moviegoers - for example, entries at various theatres charge only ₹92 on mid-week days.

Restriction Controversy

Certain Indian provinces have, though, also implemented a ceiling on admission prices, sparking a discussion on whether this must be a national restriction.

Film experts believe that while lower prices could bring in more patrons, proprietors must keep the autonomy to keep their enterprises profitable.

But, they mention that ticket costs cannot be so excessive that the common people are priced out. "Ultimately, it's the public who create the celebrities," one expert states.

Classic Theatre Challenge

At the same time, experts say that even though older theatres provide more affordable entries, many metropolitan average-income moviegoers no longer choose them because they cannot compare with the amenities and amenities of modern cinemas.

"It's a negative pattern," says an analyst. "Since visitor numbers are reduced, cinema operators are unable to finance proper maintenance. And because the cinemas are not adequately serviced, people decline to view films there."

In Delhi, only a handful of older theatres still operate. The remainder have either ceased operations or entered disrepair, their dated facilities and old-fashioned facilities a reminder of a bygone time.

Nostalgia vs Practicality

Various attendees, however, recall older theatres as simpler, more community environments.

"We would have numerous attendees packed in collectively," reminisces senior a longtime patron. "The audience would erupt when the actor was seen on the screen while sellers offered inexpensive refreshments and beverages."

Yet this nostalgia is not felt by all.

A different patron, comments after experiencing both traditional cinemas and multiplexes over the past two decades, he prefers the modern option.
